Mexico's Grand Maestro Hector Ceballos-Lascuráin Mexican Architect, Cultural Tourism Expert, Park and Protected Area Management, and Environmentalist

     Arq. Ceballos-Lascuráin is an expert in environmentally-friendly architectural design and its interrelationship with ecology, tourism, regional and protected area planning, local communities, and conservation. He graduated with highest honors at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico and carried out graduate studies in Paris, Rotterdam, London and Mexico City.

     Arq. Ceballos-Lascuráin has conducted research, served as a consultant, and collaborated with governments and private firms including CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY, UNDP, UNEP, FAO, WORLD BANK, ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES, WTO, IUCN, WWF, US-AID, IDB, NAFTA, etc. He has worldwide experience in 70 countries in the development of sustainable tourism, ecotourism, and park management. He is currently the Director General of the Program of International Consultancy on Ecotourism (PICE) and Special Advisor to THE WORLD CONSERVATION UNION and the WORLD TOURISM ORGANIZATION.

  • Developed the NATIONAL ECOTOURISM STRATEGIES - for MEXICO, ECUADOR, MALAYSIA, URUGUAY, DOMINICA, and YEMEN
  • LA RUTA MAYA - Master Plan for an Ecotourism Tourism Circuit for National Geographic Society and SECTUR
  • SIAN KA'AN, HUATULCO and YAXCHILAN for Master Plan and Architectural Design of Ecolodges in three NATIONAL PARKS (in progress)
  • ALTAMURA ISLAND - Master Plan and Architectural Design of an Ecolodge in Sinaloa, Mexico (in progress)
  • Master Instructor of Graduate Courses on Ecolodge Development at George Washington University, and on Tourism and the Environment at the Nicholas School of the Environment of Duke University,
  • Coined the term "ECOTOURISM" - and developed the preliminary definition in 1983; the modified version has since been officially adopted by IUCN
  • PRONATURA founding president of Mexico's most influential conservation NGO
  • Author or Co-author of over 100 TITLES including "Tourism, Ecotourism, and Protected Areas" published by IUCN and "International Ecolodge Guidelines" published by the International Ecotourism Society, and "Birds of Mexico" and "Aves Comunes de Mexico."
  •      Arq. Ceballos-Lascuráin currently plans to travel more in his beloved Mexico. He has a particular interest in the history of architecture, natural and cultural heritage conservation and in classical music. He is also keenly interested in ornithology and bird watching, identifying 3,296 bird species.
